Mayor’s Report – Getwell Road South Widening Project

Our largest funded priority in mitigating traffic congestion in the City of Southaven is the widening of Getwell Rd south of Church Rd to Star Landing Rd.  This is a massive project expected to cost approximately $9.8 million that has been contingent upon federal funding through the Metropolitan Planning Organization.  The City made application for these funds in 2015 knowing that we had a dire problem even then.  The MPO funding will provide approximately $7.5 million with the City paying the remaining estimated $2.3 million.  We have pressed for this project to be awarded funding and to get it under construction, but have been at the mercy of federal fund availability and federal processes.  We are now close.  Construction is projected to begin in early spring of 2022 with completion two years later.

This project will widen Getwell to five lanes and correct the traffic “bottleneck” at Church Rd.  It will include a landscaped median to improve safety and a 10-ft multi-use pedestrian trail on the west side.  The intersection of College and Getwell will also be widened with proper turning lanes and new mast-arm traffic signals.

This project is part of a comprehensive transportation improvement plan implemented in 2015 to address the traffic challenges brought about by our tremendous economic growth.  It will bring a huge value to the Getwell corridor and be supplemented by additional future projects.
